The impact of Generative AI (Gen AI) on the information ecosystem has made the headlines, especially with 2024 being a critical year for elections worldwide. This talk explores the legal considerations associated with Gen AI & disinformation. It discusses how the EU legal framework has evolved to respond to the challenges raised by Gen AI and how new provisions of the EU legal arsenal can help address the use of Gen AI for disinformation purposes including from the AI Act & the Digital Services Act (DSA). The talk shares insights coming from the EU-funded AI4Media project and recent collaborative research publications.

Noémie Krack, Legal researcher – KU Leuven, Centre for IT & IP law

Noémie Krack is a researcher at the Centre for IT and IP law (CiTiP) of KU Leuven – imec. He research focuses on media law, artificial intelligence and the challenges that technology raises for fundamental rights. She works and has worked on several European Union interdisciplinary projects on technology and media including i-Game, AI4Media and MediaFutures. She provides guest lectures in the Media law class of the KU Leuven programme Master of Intellectual Property and ICT Law (LL.M.). She is also an Editorial Board Member of the European AI Media Observatory.

Raquel Miguel Serrano, EU DisinfoLab

Raquel Miguel Serrano is a senior researcher at EU DisinfoLab. She has a background in journalism and spent most of her professional career working for the German press agency DPA until 2019, when she shifted her focus to disinformation. Raquel received a Master’s degree in Cyber Intelligence, and began working with the EU DisinfoLab. She is the author of multiple articles, mainly focused on mis- and disinformation circulating in Spain and Germany, but also on more comprehensive topics such as the impact risk of online disinformation or pre-bunking as a tool to counter information disorders. Recently, she has been working in other areas, such as FIMI or the challenges posed by generative IA.
